Why Concrete Pipe: Superior Quality.

2019_08_09-Flatiron-Plant-Tour-1-768x576-3

Concrete pipe delivers superior quality and consistency, thanks to rigorous industry standards, quality control measures, and comprehensive product testing embedded within its manufacturing process. Produced under controlled conditions in quality-assured plants, precast concrete pipe is optimized to perform as intended, ensuring reliability and longevity. Concrete pipe producers put their products under exhaustive scrutiny, including 3-edge bearing tests, aggregate and mixture sampling, finished products tests, and often third-party quality control certification testing before leaving the plant. This meticulous approach verifies that the final product aligns with design and installation requirements and adheres to recognized industry standards, such as ASTM and AASHTO, guaranteeing a dependable, high-quality concrete pipe for various applications.

Batching and mixing operations in the industry’s premier plants have been upgraded over the past 10 years. Characteristics of this operation of the pipe production process normally include:

Computer controlled weighing and proportioning systems

Computer controlled mixing systems

Automated recording systems

Absorption testing

The American Concrete Pipe Association offers an on-going quality assurance program called the “Quality Cast” Plant Certification Program.

This 124-point audit-inspection program covers the inspection of materials, finished products and handling/storage procedures, as well as performance testing and quality control documentation. Plants are certified to provide storm sewer and culvert pipe or under a combined sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and culvert pipe program.

Consistent
Complying with an abundance of industry standards, quality control measures, and incorporated product testing, the manufacturing process leads to the highest level of consistency for concrete pipe.

Controlled conditions
Precast concrete pipe is made in a controlled environment, optimizing the manufacturer’s ability to produce a consistent product that meets and often exceeds industry and performance standards.

Proof of design
Concrete pipe undergoes a variety of tests before it leaves the plant to ensure the product meets industry standards and expectations of the design load and installation requirements. These include the 3-edge bearing test (3EB), aggregate testing, mixture testing, a finished products test, and quite often a third-party quality control certification testing.

Industry Standards
Concrete pipe must meet and adhere to a variety of industry standards before it is able to be installed. From the material and physical properties of its steel, aggregate, cement, and admixtures, to the physical testing of the final product, ASTM and AASHTO standards ensure a minimum level of quality can be expected from all concrete pipes.
